Vancouver Island Etsy Shop Feature - Shirley Alexander

http://www.layalijewelry.com/mbr_bio.php#.VEQ-vMmwSYg

Tell us about who you are and how you got started doing what you do. Did you gain formal training?  Where?  If not, how did you develop your art?

My name is Shirley Alexander, and my business name is Layali Jewelry.  I got started silversmithing around 2010, in Edmonton, Alberta.  I had signed up for a few basic silversmithing classes after needing to fill a void that was left when I could no longer indulge in another passion of mine; Middle Eastern dance (or belly dance as most North Americans know it by).  My feet had suffered multiple injuries that just made dance too difficult.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that when I was creating jewelry, the hours flew by and time had no meaning… I had found where I ‘belonged’!

Shortly after finding my new-found passion, my husband retired and we moved to a home we had purchased in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island.  Our first year here was filled with renovations and acclimating ourselves to our new home, but soon the itch to create reared its head again!  I was disappointed to find that there really was next to nothing here in the way of classes and/or supplies, but I was determined and so I slowly started to build up a home studio filled with supplies and continued my silversmithing education through books and online.

Tell us about your studio. Do you have a room or workshop especially dedicated to your art? Or is it the kitchen table or a corner in your child's playroom?
I do have a room in my home I use for a studio….originally my husband and I had shared it…he for his music, me for my silversmithing, but as time went on he graciously moved his stuff to another room as I was quickly outgrowing my allotted space--- I am a bit of a ‘tool junkie’!! (Thankfully, my husband, who is also a ‘tool junkie’ when it comes to wood, understands completely!)

The main anchor in my studio is an antique watchmakers desk, which is where a lot of my work takes place…..when you are working on jewelry, in order to have the best ergonomics, your table surface needs to actually be higher than a normal desk or table….this is so you don’t strain your neck and shoulders by hunching over something you are working on (although I think we all do this to some extent anyways).

Tell us about your processes. How do you work? Do you listen to music or need quiet? Is it sporadic or do you dedicate set hours to work?
I love all types of music, and usually have a great playlist going while I am working!  I tend to switch playlists as the mood strikes me, but when it comes down to something I really have to focus on, only instrumental music will do, my current favourite being a playlist of Vienna waltzes (yup, I know…weird).

I do try to maintain a sort of schedule for working in my shop… I find if I don’t, there is always something that gets in the way of me being there.  I am not the sort that can pop in and spend an hour…once I’m there, I’m there, and prefer to have at LEAST four to five hours work time.

What are the toughest challenges you find in keeping consistent hours?  What other challenges do you face in your work and what ways have you been able to address them (if you have)?
I think that keeping a consistent schedule of getting into the studio can actually be the toughest thing! The rest of life doesn’t just stop…other responsibilities and commitments have a way of eating up that time!  I say this, and yet I know there are a lot of other artists out there with small children and full time jobs that somehow manage it and I have NO idea how they do that!  I am very fortunate to have a supportive husband who will often tackle the housework etc. on a day when I really need some ‘studio time’!!

What types of materials do you use and why?
I primarily work in either sterling silver or copper.  Gold is just way too expensive, at least at this stage of the game for me.  Sterling silver can be expensive as well, and so often if I am trying a new design etc, I will make a prototype in copper first.   I do love working with copper and wish more people would really consider it when it came to jewelry…..it looks beautiful with many skin tones, and there are many solutions if you are one of those who get the dreaded “green marks” from a reaction with that metal….copper can easily be coated to prevent that!  I have been experimenting with some copper-etched designs this fall, and that is a great deal of fun!

I never work with silver plate or any base metal that is silver in colour (one exception are the stainless steel clasps I have on my leather cord necklaces).  It is always my hope that when I am making a sterling silver piece of jewelry, that it will become a treasured keepsake.  To me, sterling is always preferable over silver plate, as you can polish it forever and it will always look great (I have some Victorian era pieces that will attest to this!)…silver plate DOES wear off in time …..great for fun and fad jewelry, but if you are paying for, say, a beautiful cameo necklace, it should be something that will endure.

Where else do you sell your work?
In addition to my Etsy shop, my jewelry can also be purchased from my website at www.LayaliJewelry.com

Where else are you on the web?
My internet links are as follows: (Click on each link to follow Layali Jewelry online)

Why do you think people should buy handmade?
You know, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately!  I know that I love buying handmade and had long before I was a jewelry artist!  There is a certain care and attention that goes into a handmade item, and it shows through in the workmanship and attention to detail! You also wind up with something very unique….an interpretation of the artist’s own vision!  I can almost guarantee that if you sit a couple of jewelry artists down with a general pattern and the same supplies, you are likely going to wind up with two very different pieces!  In my own field, when you buy something handmade from a jewelry artist, they are going to be able to tell you a lot about the piece you are purchasing. Also, unlike a mass-manufactured piece, it is likely that before releasing that item for sale, the artist has looked it over to ensure its quality!  I know that for me, I never will release anything for sale that I feel I wouldn’t purchase myself!  As a long time antique jewelry collector, I can get pretty picky, and my customers benefit from that!

What goals do you have?
Well…..I started to sell my jewelry simply because you get to a point where you can’t wear it all!  It has been a wonderful experience, and I believe that you become a much better craftsperson by making the decision to sell your work.  All of a sudden, you are producing more work, and in some instances, when you are creating multiples, you learn to refine your process.  This actually was my initial goal – just to become a better craftsperson. I am now at a point where I would like to see my studio being supported by the work that I sell and to perhaps have it become a part-time income opportunity for me.

What are three items in your shop that you are particularly proud of?
1.      My 'Victorian-style Cameo Necklace'.  In addition to being a beautiful piece of jewelry, which I feel could be handed down as an heirloom, it was the first time I had actually made a brooch clasp!

2.       My 'Keepin’ It Together' set of 3 sterling silver bangles with hinged keeper.  I was very happy with how the hinged keeper box came out on this….it turned out exactly how I had planned it, which is always nice!

3.       My 'Having a Ball' Sterling Silver and Jade earrings.  These came about as a result of a tricky soldering exercise.  They appear to be deceptively simple, but three different strengths of solder are used, and they are quite difficult to keep in place while they are being soldered.  Conquering them made me feel much more confident about tricky soldering tasks!

Will you be at any art/craft fairs this year?  Any other place you will be (or have been) that you would like us to know about?
I will be at the Kris Kringle Craft Fair in Nanaimo, BC this Christmas season, from November 20 – 23rd, 2014, and will be at the Out of Hand Xmas Artisan Market which will take place at the Crystal Garden in Victoria, BC from November 28 – 30th, 2014.

Have you been in the news or featured elsewhere?
Shortly after I launched my website at www.LayaliJewelry.com, Jewelspan did a featured artist interview with me, which can be viewed HERE.

I have also been named Jewelspan’s 'Jeweller/Jewellery Website of the Day' a couple of times since fall of 2013.

A2Sea Is Now In Three Tourist Gift Shops!

OUR THIRD OUTLET

Cheryl and I are quite thrilled to report that our creations are now officially in three tourist shops! This one is the latest... a little gift shop in Brown's Bay Resort, just north of Campbell River.

The lady who owns the resort contacted us through our Etsy site to ask if she could sell our products in her shop. So I decided to go down there personally to meet her and bring basically one of everything we make. She decided to buy just that... one of almost everything - just to see how things sell. She also placed an order for a few more items so, all in all, I would say it was a pretty successful day.

I had arrived ridiculously early as I wasn't quite certain how long it would take me to get there and I haaaaaaaaaaaaate being late. So I walked down to their floating restaurant and had some lunch. You will never guess what I ate... not in a million years. I had sushi with yam fries in the middle! Crazy! I had to order it to try it out because I had never heard of it before. They were quite yummy, btw. I was impressed with the restaurant... the cook gave two free candy-covered ice cream cones to two little girls, which I thought was a really nice touch.

Here is one of the mirrors we sold to Brown's Bay Resort. This one is completely covered in sand: white and brown. We do not have this style on our site quite yet, but we have a similar one that is worth checking out. We will be posting one like this soon so be sure to check out our site from time to time.

So we better get back at it. Looks like we are going to be pretty busy for awhile!

Bringing the Beach To You

SEA SHELLS AND SAND TILE ART

Cheryl and I attended our first ever Etsy Craft Party in Nanaimo last Friday. What really impressed me was the fact that this party was actually going in other cities all over the world! It proved to be an innovative way to connect and network with other Etsyians while forming new friendships, exchanging ideas and learning new crafts. And, I must add, share delicious snacks... very important!

Speaking of connecting, my niece came to the party with her mom. I hadn't seen either of them for a long time so it was really an extra special evening for me. She was teaching us a few beading techniques and, while referring to a few of her jewelry pieces, she used a term I had never heard before... "UFP's". So I asked her what that meant and she replied, "Unfinished Projects." I laughed and told her I could certainly relate to that!

This Sea Shell and Sand Art Tile you see here was one of those 'UFP's that I finally decided to finish. Now I must tackle a few other 'UFP's' and hopefully change the meaning of the term to:
'U Forgot to Procrastinate'!

I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy this wonderful weather! I am off to do a Singing Telegram in Duncan, BC today. The poor girl has no idea what is about to happen to her. (Snicker).

Have a happy, creative day everyone!

Neighbourhood Craft & Garage Sale This Weekend!

You are invited to join in the fun...
get warm by the fire, roast a hot dog, slurp on some yummy hot chocolate with marshmallows, listen to carols, do some Christmas shopping, get some bargains and visit all at the same time! Several other homes from our neighbourhood have joined in with us to have a Craft and Garage Sale.... crafts for those looking for new and unique Christmas gift ideas and a garage sale for those looking for some great 2nd hand bargains. So, in other words, something for everyone!

Last year, after David and I moved into the neighbourhood, we put on a big Halloween open house so we could get to know our neighbours in a fun way. We had hot chocolate, hot dogs, cake, chips (all the healthy stuff) and lots of decorations and a campfire. We missed that this year because David had to work straight through the weekend. Poor guy. So it will be nice to have a chance to get together with folks again and enjoy the season together! Hope you can come out, too!

Two More Sleeps!

TWO MORE SLEEPS!

Well it's just two more sleeps until our big sale and we're pretty excited! As it turns out, the sale actually starts at 9 am, which is good news for me, not being a morning person and all! Someone had their wires crossed. We will be there setting up at 8 however. So if you come early, no problem... there will be coffee on and doughnuts provided. Doughnuts are in the five food group category.... aren't they? Later on, they will be serving hotdogs so that will be handy dandy...no need to bring a lunch!

So many purty things have we! Here is an example of one of our newest 'Mermaid Treasure Pendants' and the pretty bottles you see underneath are chock full of our homemade, Lavendar Sea Salt Scrub. Men... we know how you most of you dislike wrapping presents so we have done the work for you... each bottle is all decked out in cellophane, special 'mermaid ribbon', a Happy Mom's Day sign and ready to present to your mom or sweetie!

Well, Cheryl and I are both pretty pooped but we are looking forward to our sale and seeing people we know. A special thanks to Dorothy for coming out the day before to help us and for lending us her canopy! Oh... and for getting us boxes, telling people about us and being an all around great support! My hubby David just offered to help us get everything to the sale and back, offering his muscles and his big vehicle. This is a huge gift because my body is pretty wrecked (lol) and Cheryl was prepared to do all the grunt work while I set the stuff out and decorated. I was feeling bad about that. So thank you so much for offering my dear hubby! I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a big, fat smoocharooni. What a wonderful thing it is to have a hubby who is on your team! I am blessed.

It is supposed to be sunny on Saturday so that will be a bonus! Hope to 'sea' you all there!

Last Minute Details

Ahoy Mateys!

Our very first local fair is almost here and we are madly but happily wrapping up all those last minute details before the big day! So much to think about... signs and pricing and displays and tags and bags and wrapping paper and tables and chairs and a canopy and a float and a banner... and so on and so on and so on... On that note, I would be remiss not to mention our fantastic 10 foot banner that my son Matt at Inerseshen Creative Media designed and created for us. It is truly a work of art and we will be ever so proud to display it! Thank you son!

We hope to 'sea' you all there mateys! Saturday, May 9th from 8 am to 2 pm at 2443 Alberni Hwy in Coombs. If you are traveling west, pass the Coombs Market, go over the bridge and on your right, at the Independant Marine Store, you will see our table set up with other local sellers of nautical treasures! Mom's Day is the next day so come prepared to find many one of a kind, ocean-themed gifts for your mom and sweetheart! We will have plenty for Dad's day, also!

Okay...now where was I? Tags and bags and....

ATTENTION ALL OCEAN LOVERS!

Our first local fair is almost here! Cheryl and I will have a table set up at this very popular and widely attended Marine Swap and Shop and we are getting pretty excited! I was told that approximately 700 people show up to this event so this is a great opportunity for A2Sea Creations to get its feet wet, so to speak!

Coombs is a very well known and popular tourist spot on Vancouver Island. I highly recommend planning a day and coming to see it all... the Coombs Market where goats actually live on the roof! They have a their own little barn and grass up there ! So funny and a must-see! Then there are all the quaint little gift shops and the local guitar players singing outside. You can visit Fat Phege's Fudge Factory and watch them make their own caramel in an enourmous vat and oh... the aroma! Mmmmm.... A big thank you to them for providing us with biodegradeable bags for our sales, by the way!

After you pass the Coombs Market, travel west on the Alberni Hwy and just beyond the bridge on your right is the Independant Marine Store. On May 9th, from 8 am to 2 pm, Cheryl and I will be under a canopy with our table filled with our seaside treasures for every occasion and any budget! Mother's Day is the next day so we will be featuring a few special gifts ideal for Mom and your sweetheart!

We hope to 'sea' you there. There will be a bbq so you won't need to bring a lunch. Stop in and say hi!

A New Craft Room!

Today was a very productive day and I have my hubby David to thank for that. He bought me a large fold up table and some bookshelves for our spare room so it could be turned into a craft room for me. Until now, Cheryl and I have been creating in my kitchen because it was the only room large enough to work in together. So you can probably imagine the chaos involved in trying to cook around such things as seashells, driftwood, sea glass, moss, raffia, fish netting, crab shells and a multitude of other seaside treasures. Fortunately for me, I am quite adaptable and can work amidst chaos. And also fortunately for me, David is extremely lay back and easy-going and does not get his knickers in a knot over these things. In fact, when I apologized for the mess he said, "What mess? When I'm sitting in my chair here (in the livingroom) I can't see any mess."

What a man I have... a real prize. Not many men would put up with having to make coffee in the morning over a sink full of soaking seashells and a counter full of cleaned crab shells and drying driftwood! Not many indeed! But even so, it will be nice to have some order in my home once again. And Cheryl, my partner in crime, is an amazing organizer and has kindly offered to help me get my new room set up. So thanks to David and Cheryl, my life will soon be back to normal, until I find another way to mess it up, that is.
