Vancouver Island Etsy Shop Feature - Kent Olinger

Tell us how you got started doing what you do. Did you gain formal training?  If not, how did you develop your art?
I started metalsmithing as a hobby approximately 20 years ago. After taking a couple of start-up classes at the Edmonton Cultural Centre, I continued to learn and refine my craft over the years by reading how-to books and articles and watching how-to videos, but mostly learning by trial and error so I consider myself to be self taught.

In the mid-90’s, I left a full time position as an instructor in the Paramedic Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton to pursue metalsmithing full time and have since developed my hobby into a successful small business.

Where do you produce your work?
I relocated from Edmonton to Gabriola Island, BC in 1998 where I produced and sold my jewelry from my home-based studio/gallery and became an active member of the community Arts Council. In 2006, I relocated to Chemainus on Vancouver Island and continue to produce my jewelry to date from my home-based studio/workshop there as well as participate in local artist events.

What types of materials do you use? Why?
I work with various metals but primarily focus on creating copper jewelry. I used to work primarily in sterling silver, but it simply got too expensive. I will still make a piece in silver if specifically requested; however, working in copper allows me to keep my work priced affordably for my customers.

What are three items in your shop that you are particularly proud of?
Many of my handcrafted jewelry designs are inspired by the nature of West Coast living as showcased in my heron and crow pieces of which I am most proud.  (Click on photos to view in Kent's Etsy shop and to read descriptions of process involved in making these pieces.)

What goals do you have?
I am constantly aspiring to learn new methods and techniques including my most recent venture of flame painting on copper.

What are the tools of your trade?
The tools of my trade consist of a variety of jewelry-making supplies, findings, hammers, saw blades and so forth as well as a propane oxygen torch and a small kiln.

What challenges do you face in your work and what ways have you addressed them?
July 2013, I joined Etsy.com and set up an on-line shop called Images By Kent Olinger. Being a seller on Etsy has offered me the opportunity to showcase my work on the World Wide Web and has helped me overcome my biggest challenge as an artist which was simply getting my work out there. Etsy has offered me the perfect platform to do so. My exposure on Etsy has also led to an opportunity to display and promote my work through the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, Washington, as well as a feature in the upcoming fall/winter edition of Amazing Canadian FashionMagazine.

Have you been in the news or featured elsewhere?
Past Honors include: Alberta Government - Commissioned brooch given to Canadian Premiers’ wives at the 17th Premier's Conference - Jasper Alberta, 1996. World Figure Skating Championship, 1996 - Commissioned limited edition brooch. The National Gallery of Canada Gift Shop - Commissioned brooch "Stormy Weather" from Group of Seven painter F.A. Varley, for "Canadian Museums Selections" catalogue, 1997. Designed and produced lapel pin for Nanaimo, BC Chamber of Commerce annual Business awards 2000-2005. Designed and produced "Year of Service Award Pins" for Coastal Community Credit Union 2001-2006.

Will you be at any art/craft fairs this year?  Any other places you sell your work?
I also display and sell my work at the weekly local Chemainus Farmers’ Market, May through September, and participate in the annual Ladysmith Arts on the Avenue each August. My work is sold in retail shops in Nanaimo, Victoria and Canmore, as well as the National Gallery of Canada Gift Shop.

Where may we find you online?

Men Are NOT Forgotten at A2Sea Creations

I am happy to say that our Etsy Shop has several gifts that are very suitable for the men.  We haven't forgotten you fellas!   Above is my newest creation which may be worn by both women and men alike.  This pendant is quite unique... I hand-picked moss and lichen from several trees in the forest (in pouring rain, I might add) and dried them in the oven.  It was not a pleasant odor.  (An understatement!)  In fact, I thought the fumes might be poisoning my hubby and I.  Still don't know if they did but we're still alive, so that's promising.  Anyhow, I am pleased to say that after a couple of days, the smell went away.  I had to air out my oven for quite awhile though so I'm thinking that if I do this again, I will need to think of some other method.

The upside of it all is that I got this idea to use some of the lichen and moss I had collected and preserve it under glass in a handsome new pendant.  I am loving how it turned out.  It actually looks kind of like a little scene from under the sea!  I also discovered that the moss worked beautifully on some magnets I made the other day for the Parksville Tourist Centre.

So we have some other creations that are just great for men as well...  we have a very rustic, seaside mirror(see above)  and our Nautical Treasure Box which is great for cigars, pens or pencils, reading glasses, coins... you name it. (see below).

We also have our 'Message In A Bottle' (see below left ) and our Floating Candle Beach Lantern.  (see below right).  So there you go gals... gift ideas for your fellas (or yourselves, for that matter!)  Now let's hope our weather improves enough to actually go to the beach!  We are so looking forward to that once again!

An Update from Micki

It is truly hard to remember to update our blog in the midst of daily life and all the distractions that come with it.  And I am very easily distracted - much like a crow to shiny things.  So here I am finally focused on updating our blog and letting you all know what is happening on the home front.

We have been contacted by the Tourist Centre in Parksville, BC to bring in our handmade beach treasures to show them in person.  They discovered us through our online shop on Etsy.  We are excited about having another place to sell our products.  So if it all goes well, you will soon be able to see A2Sea Creations in Parksville!  That will be our fourth town, which is very cool!.  It is very validating to have people seek you out and ask if they can carry your products.

Also, Cheryl has been hard at work creating her quilting magic once again.  Her newest creation is a lovely wall hanging called 'Around the Pond'.  Check it out...

We have also added something new to our shop since our last posting.  I took a pottery class and ran right home and created a few pieces for our shop.  We have sold a couple of them already.  Here are a few more...

Hopefully, in the near future, there will be more pottery items to choose from.   It has been fun learning a new medium.  Have a great March everyone!  I am looking forward to seeing more of the glorious sun and planting more flowers!

(Micki also has another Etsy Shop called A2Sea Photography and a singing telegram business called Tickleberry Telegrams.  She also has a coffee table book for sale on Blurb called An Ocean View.)

Win A Mermaid Treasure Pendant!

THE MERMAID TREASURE PENDANT GIVE-AWAY!

Cheryl and I are pleased to announce that we are sponsoring a Give-Away Contest and if you would like to participate in the fun, just click on the photo above and it will lead you right there to the blog that is featuring the contest - 'Tools Are For Women Too!' And while you're there, take some time to peruse through this awesome blog and see what they are up to and the wonderful art they help promote.

Our Mermaid Treasure Pendant is a darling miniature bottle filled with precious mermaid treasure which consists of baby seashells, white 'fish netting', glass bits that sparkle in the sunlight and tiny beads. The blue fluid is... well... we can't tell you because it is a magical, secret solution known only by mermaids and mermen. But we can tell you that it is non-toxic. The top has a very tight, secure fit. It comes with a pewter starfish charm tied on with raffia.

For those of you who believe in recycling (as we do) you should know that the glass bits inside the bottle are actually, and you aren't going to believe this, tiny bits of broken windshield glass. Nifty huh? Mermaids collect EVERYTHING!

Best of luck to all you participants. May the best Mermaid or Merman win!

Something's Fishy at A2Sea Creations

Fish Tales - Unique Tin Pendant With Pewter Starfish Charm

When it comes to designing new jewelry, I find it quite easy to be inspired by the sea. And it is such a satisfying feeling seeing someone wearing your design.

This is the newest addition to our online gift shop. There are a lot of ocean lovers out there, like ourselves, so our creations are appreciated all around the world... and that makes us pretty happy. Like music, the sea is something that so many of us have in common and it tends to draw us together. It is a magical place that holds so many wonderful memories for so many of us. And it's never quite the same... always new treasures to be found and collected. It's like a treasure hunt and who doesn't love those?

Well, now that we have posted this new jewelry design, what will be next, I wonder? I can hardly wait to find out!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the Olympics as much as Cheryl and I have. What an exciting time to be a Canadian, I must say! We are so proud.

Learning New Things

Beachcomber's Bounty - Earthy Jewelry Set

A very popular pendant fashion at the moment are the longer styles. And even more popular are the ones you can adjust to any length. There is a store in Coombs that is interested in carrying my jewelry but asked if I could just change the cords to the slip knot style. I said I would give it a try.

So, with some help from my hubby, (he was a boy scout, way back when) I managed to learn the technique and posted one on our Etsy site. I love to learn new things... except for those painful moments when you are all thumbs and think you will never get the hang of it. But it's such a good feeling when you finally master something and see the finished product.

My next challenge is to start drilling holes through sea glass and seashells with my dremel tool. I've watched some videos and my dear hubby has offered to give me a hand. This will open the door to creating so many more wonderful jewelry pieces.

I have a sense of excitement about this year. I have made up my mind to do some things I have only talked about up till now. If I can't do them on my own, I will find help. The possibilities are endless and I am up for it.

So keep an eye out for our new jewelry and nautical treasures we will be posting soon on A2Sea Creations!

A2SEA COMES TO EBAY!

Today we, at A2Sea Creations, brought our seaside treasures to eBay for the first time! We wanted to combine our intense love for the sea with our appreciation for vintage designs. So we combined the two in our new and delightful 'Vintage Inspired Seaside Glass Pendant'. And the best part is, you can pick out your favorite design out of all the wonderful choices of vintage pictures we have on display! So cool! Click on the picture below to view larger and click here to see our eBay listing. Perhaps you'd like to even place a bid!!

At our online shop, we create and sell unique, beautifully handcrafted, ocean-inspired treasures designed to bring the West Coast into your home. We take pride in the fact that we use primarily local, organic, recycled, upcycled & eco-friendly materials that we collect with our own little hands from the beaches of Vancouver Island, BC. Canada. We bleach all the shells we collect, wash the driftwood and dry it with the seaweed in my oven (interesting smell!) It is truly a labour of love and we love what we do. Wish us luck on eBay and tell your friends and family!

Memories and Music

CANNON BEACH, OREGON - PHOTO BY MICKI FINDLAY

Holy cow! I can't believe how long it's been since I've blogged! I have been very very busy finishing a huge wedding song contract so I have been a little preoccupied, to say the least. But today I finally got it all finished and packed up ready to ship to Ontario. What a great feeling... especially because the recipient is so happy with her song! It is very creatively fulfilling for me.

As for my trip to Oregon to visit my son Matt, his wife Cristina and my adorable and funny baby grandson Levi, what a treat that was for me! I took the slow way down to Roseburg, along the Oregon Coast; a breathtaking part of the world. The ocean is crazy wild and there are so many quaint, old, interesting towns along the way. I took in the Sea Lion Caves which amazed me... so much so that I stood in one spot for over an hour because I could not pull myself away from the sight of hundreds upon hundreds of sea lions sitting, playing and nuzzling. Some of the males challenged each other on the rocks as the violent waves came crashing over them. It was a memory I will never forget.
I so enjoyed getting to know my grandson. I feel so blessed that I was able to be there while Levi did some new things for the very first time. He had changed so dramatically over the course of a year and I have missed so much, sadly. But he sure made up for it while I was there!

As far as
A2Sea Creations is concerned, much of our work has been put on hold during the summer months as Cheryl and I have caught up on time with our families that live so far away. However, I did make some new wire-wrapped sea glass pendants and one is now for sale on our site. Cheryl has been making magnets for our upcoming Nanaimo Farmer's Market. (Sept 29th) I will be posting more info about that soon. We sold a couple of items and I just mailed them off to Iowa today. I love how the internet makes our world so 'small'! I get to talk with people all over the world and know that our creations are being enjoyed in so many faraway places. So cool!

I hope everyone is having a great summer and spending time catching up with loved ones also!

New Vintage Seaside Pendants

Well I must say, the markets are always a surprise... one never knows how they are going to work out so it's always an adventure! Our last one was on Canada Day in Parksville at the beach. We had to be all set up by 9 am but no one came and no one came and still, no one came. So I asked someone if they knew what was up. They said, "Oh, no one really comes until after the parade... around 12:30." Wow! That would have been helpful information to have a little earlier.

Then, after a long day of only 3 very small sales, 4:30 rolled around and we figured we'd better pack up. So, disappointed and discouraged, we were about to put things away when all of a sudden, customers suddenly started coming in droves and were buying, buying, buying! What a funny day. We ended up staying an extra two hours to accommodate all the customers and Cheryl and I were both feeling a whole lot better !

Markets are a great deal of work but it is a very rewarding feeling to have people appreciate your creations. We were able to do some networking as well and obtain a few possible leads as to where else we may be able to sell our nautical treasures. And the day was perfect... the sun shone, the wind blew... oh yes... the wind. That's a whole other story. If you are a marketer, you know what I am talking about. That is a challenge in itself. The first hour was taken up with finding ways to keep things from blowing away!

I had designed some Canada Day Pendants and photo pendants for the market. We now have some new pendants for sale on our site which I am rather excited about. They are vintage-inspired with a seaside twist. There are several designs to choose from, as you will see there in one of the photos. Perfect for a beach wedding gift for sure! We also have some new seaside, multi-purpose boxes for sale now which are such a great gift for men and women alike. They hold pen and pencils, cigars, change, even reading glasses. And they truly are West-Coast creations; embellished with seashells, driftwood and sea glass that Cheryl and I have collected from our Vancouver Island beaches.

Well, we hope everyone's summer is turning out to be wonderful. I am going to Oregon soon to see my son and his wife and my grandbaby, which is something I am so excited about!

Happy summer everyone!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NAOMI!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NAOMI! - Photoart created by Micki Findlay

Today I would like to dedicate our blog to a dear friend and wonderful human being... Naomi. Many of you know her from her Etsy Shop called Art by Naomi - Studio Treats, where she has a delightful variety and vast array of scrapbooking embellishments, cards, journals, paper weights, magnets and her original art. My personal favorite is her 'Life of the Party' done in acrylic paints and embellished with pencil sketching. It is truly yummy!

She also has another Etsy shop called Art by Naomi - Ornamentals where she sells a whimsical and delightful variety of jewelry and keychains.
So today I would like to wish this dear lady a fantastic birthday! She has helped me immensely in setting up our own shop; patiently, I might add, and I would like to publicly thank her for that. She has a ton of wonderful feedback on her site from satisfied customers and there is a reason for that. Her products are top quality, yes, but her personality is wonderful also and people appreciate that. And I love how she takes the time to do that little bit extra to make things special.

So, dear friend, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!! You deserve it!
